Willowdean wants nothing more than her mother's approval. Hence, she enters a pageant which her mother runs (Miss Teen Bluebonnet). This goes pretty slow until she summons the assistance of a friend of long ago, who is now a drag queen.
This inspires others who also feel that they could never win such an event. What ensues is fun, positive and acquires some modicum of closure. Even with the fact that this is a musical.
Music comes from Country and Western legend Dolly Parton. The overall Texas theme is very prevalent, including Dumplin's love interest, Bo (Luke Benward). By the way, Dumplin' is Rosie's nickname for Willowdean.
Yep, you know they're from Texas when they have two first names. Accordingly, there's a little wisdom. And a little humor.
Aniston is normally excellent in all that she endeavors. Dumplin' included. But, her Southern accent could use a slight re-doin'.
Nonetheless, this is delightful.
