Self-Care, it's Not a Buzzword - it is a Must

Self-care isn’t just the buzzword of the moment, and it is an essential thing to keep you feeling emotionally and mentally balanced. In this modern hyper-connected world, it is easier than ever to start feeling alone and a little less than wonderful. We sit and scroll through social media and see post after post of the perfect life, with quotes in between. But, that isn’t always true, and self-care shouldn’t be seen as just the next trend to sell you a dream. Here are a few things that you can do to take care of you in a technological world, where real connections can feel few and far between.

Eat Well.
If you love pasta, potatoes, cheese or huge salads be sure that you eat them. Balance the stuff that you like with the things that are good for you. Nourishing your body with fruits, vegetables and the occasional treat keeps everything in balance. You can also book meals with your friends, and the social aspect coupled with the soul food aspect will give you an emotional and mental boost. Lovely.

Do Nothing.
This might seem a little bit counterproductive, as we are told that we should be multitasking as often as possible. The truth is however that doing many different tasks a day at the same time we are knocking our concentration out of whack. It takes up to 15 minutes to refocus on the work you were doing if you swap between tasks. Which is a bit of a long time if you count how many times a day you’re switching jobs! Pick a film with subtitles, and you will find that to keep track you can’t scroll on your phone, or take a phone call. All your attention has to be on the movie. Clever eh!

Physically Well.
Having aches and pains that we don’t take care of has more of an impact that you might think. In fact, earache, toothache, backache and lousy posture are all main culprits for stealing your peaceful sleep. The less rest you have, the more of a strain you’ll find it has on your mood and ability to concentrate. Ideally, you’re going to need to book an appointment with your GP for a general health check-up – and to talk about any issues you’ve been avoiding, and book with a dentist like to get your smile in tip-top condition.

Go Green.
No, although recycling and being eco-friendly IS better for us and the environment this one specifically relates to you getting out into the great outdoors. Fresh air, and being surrounded by less city noise and more nature does wonders for your mental health. It isn’t a cure-all, and once is probably not going to be enough but taking a great book and leaning against a tree on a summers day is going to reconnect you to yourself in a big way.

To experience peace does not mean that your life is always blissful. It means that you are capable of tapping into a blissful state of mind amidst the normal chaos of a hectic life.
